The Chinese saying is the motto of De Wu Pugilistic Association, a strong belief and value passed down through the generations, with the meaning of “through wushu, we will be united with friendship and brotherhood, regardless of where we came from”.
It is one of the Chinese values the association hopes to inculcate in every student’s mind that through the learning of wushu builds strong bonding among the fellow mates, without prejudice and discrimination of one’s place of origin, religion or beliefs.
De Wu History
De Wu Pugilistic Association was officially formed in 1987 by a group of passionate wushu practitioners, aiming to promote the spirit of wushu, and enable people from all walks of life to have a better understanding of the Chinese tradition and culture.
The association initially started its first wushu class with 20 students at Mountbatten Community Centre in 1986, taught by Master Leo Kee Ann. Master Leo is also the key personnel involved in the formation of the association.
Due to his effort in promoting wushu, with the help and support from many wushu practitioners, students and parents, the association expanded quickly and widely over the years, with more than 50 locations in Singapore today.
De Wu also has trained up its very own pool of qualified and experienced wushu instructors, certified by Singapore National Wushu Federation (SNWF).
While building up its own talent pool, Mr. Leo and many instructors trained under him have also been grooming young potentials in wushu, injecting new bloods to the national wushu team, led by the SNWF.
To name a few, siblings Leo Wen Yeow and Rui Yan are two national representatives who have clinched gold medals in several international competitions and have done us proud.
Taking up wushu at a tender age, the Leo siblings have now become mentors, coaching the younger generation on wushu learning and cultivation.
The association also has many students who are duly rewarded for their hard work and effort, winning medals and honor in international, national and inter-varsity wushu competitions annually; many are also selected to be part of the national youth team.
